Leveraging more than three decades of excellence as a biotechnology entrepreneur, Dr. Northrup has earned distinction as the leader of several companies. In this capacity, he was the chief technical officer of Cepheid and the chief executive of officer of Microfluidic Systems, MIODx, and Spiritus Bio. At Spiritus Bio he is focusing his efforts on creating unique facemasks. Additionally, he has been a principal for the Northrup Consulting Group since 2011 and a science advisory board member for Fluigent since 2011. He is also a valued member of the National Academy of Engineering.
Prior to his current role, Dr. Northrup began his career in the microengineering and biomedical sciences division of the Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory in 1991. He then served as the co-founder, chief technical officer and vice president of research for Cepheid from 1996 to 2001. Following this time, he was the chief executive officer for Microfluidic Systems from 2001 until 2012. In 2013, he became a collaborator for the San Francisco Veterans Administration Medical Center until joining MIODx as their chief executive officer in 2014. While in this role, he also served as a member of the technical advisory board for Theranos from 2017 to 2019.
Over the course of his career, Dr. Northrup has contributed over 50 works to peer-reviewed publications and holds 51 issued patents in microtechnology for biological and chemical detection. He was a founding member of the Chemical and Biological Miniature Society and serves as a mentor and advisor for The Thiel Foundation, which he joined in 2013. He is also a mentor with the National Laboratory Entrepreneurial Academy and the University of California, Davis. Among his professional accomplishments, he is proud to have been inducted to the Entrepreneurs Hall of Fame by the Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory in 2013. He was also admitted as a fellow to the Royal Society of Chemistry the same year and was admitted to the American Institute of Medical and Biological Engineers.
Prior to embarking on his professional journey, Dr. Northrup earned a Bachelor of Science in Zoology from the University of Vermont in 1976. He then attained a Master of Science in Biology from Humboldt State University in 1980. He subsequently gained a Doctor of Philosophy in Biomedical and Medical Engineering from the University of California, Davis in 1991. Well-qualified in his field, he holds a membership in the American Institute of Medical and Biological Engineers. Within the coming years, Dr. Northrup intends to focus more of his time on his health, having recently survived a stroke.
